Ohio industrialist Sam Dodsworth (Walter Huston) is a cuckolded tycoon whose frivolous wife Fran (Ruth Chatterton) frets about aging—and his early retirement upsets the comfortable balance of their relationship.

William Wyler’s 1936 masterpiece about a crumbling marriage follows the unhappy middle-aged couple on the grand European vacation they’ve always dreamed of, as they debate whether to make it work or move on with other people. Based on the satirical Sinclair Lewis novel and its smash Broadway adaptation, it’s a sophisticated melodrama as modern and insightful about relationships as any contemporary film. Mary Astor co-stars as divorcée who’s made a fulfilling independent life for herself, and the striking Art Deco and streamline sets earned Canadian production designer Richard Day the second of his seven Academy Awards for Best Art Direction. See the movie David Mamet declares as being one of only four he considers “perfect films” (the other three being The Godfather, A Place in the Sun and Galaxy Quest)!
